My point was that the Mishnah makes no attempt to link its rulings to Torah texts. Rather it claims to be Torah., the Oral Torah, something the Written Torah knows nothing about. True rabbis don't admit this, and the Gemorah tries to show the links between Mishnah and Torah, but the Mishnah speaks for itself.

I hope that helps. If not, read Jacob Neusner's books or Ellis Rivkin's the Hidden Revolution.

As for some Jews being upset with me... Yeah that is the story of my life beginning with my years growing up in an Orthodox shul. I learn to live with it.Rabbi Ramihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07549679279782491931noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18968172.post-23236201428695245022010-02-26T04:27:05.548-08:002010-02-26T04:27:05.548-08:00Some Jewish people are going to be very upset with...Some Jewish people are going to be very upset with you Mr.know-it-all!

; )Just me.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03278907125754497884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18968172.post-40370192917187711062010-02-25T14:22:55.368-08:002010-02-25T14:22:55.368-08:00Rabbi,
You wrote, "...the Mishnah, is total...Rabbi,

You wrote, "...the Mishnah, is totally independent of Torah, and makes no attempt to link itself to Torah."

This confuses me. My understanding was that the Mishna does link itself to Torah and that's why Pirkei Avot starts out the way that it does (Moshe kibel Torah miSinai etc.). The Rambam in his Mishneh Toreh does the same thing. I agree that these are separate and that the Mesorah as is understood by many in the Orthodox world, is a story and not history, to use your terminology, however, I always thought that the Mishna, the Rishonim, etc. thought of themselves as linked and extensions of the Torah.

Can you clarify?Jake Richterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15136373380019245340noreply@blogger.com
